Ten Things You Get for Free at CMC

Every college is a little different. Colleges and universities place priority on some things over others because of history, location, size, and access to resources. CMC is no different. We have a strong connection to Los Angeles and the Pacific Rim, we have Army ROTC because it fits with the founding of the College, and we have fewer majors (but do them well) because of the Claremont Consortium.

I was thinking the other day about all the “free stuff” that CMC students receive, and realized that this stuff helps make CMC different from other institutions. I started drawing up a list of the free stuff that students receive, and came up with the following (in no particular order):

1. The Athenaeum. Access to great speakers four nights per week, plus gourmet meals, is virtually unheard of at most colleges. And we’re getting big name speakers.

2. Ath Tea. Free snacks and drinks five days per week, plus great company.

3. Late Night Snack. We think of Collins as serving three meals per day, but it’s really more like four meals per day. And this one is free!

4. Printing. I spent $116 on two black and two color ink cartridges at Costco this week. You probably didn't.

5. Room Cleaning. That’s right, once every two weeks, our housekeeper will vacuum your space.

6. Board Plus. You get $160, $120, or $80 on your ID card each semester, even though you didn’t put it there.

7. Sports Tickets. Technically, we don’t have tickets at all. Just go, sit, cheer, socialize, and leave. We don’t have a lottery for tickets; you just go.

8. T-Shirts! Let’s see, one during orientation, one for the “I Rann with Gann” run, one for WOA, one for winning intramurals, one for the “6th man” fan shirt, and several more from the residence halls, sports teams, clubs, sponsors, and so forth.

9. New Student Orientation. This may not sound like a big deal, considering that we make you attend. But a lot of colleges charge you a separate fee to attend the orientation program. We do not.

10. Tchotchkes from Career Services. Pens, fans, lanyards, microwave popcorn, stress balls, and more. They have all the cool stuff. You should go there, if you haven't already.

There’s probably more out there. Go see for yourself.
